Bimini, Bahamas

The Inlet

Our experience entering North Bimini as of February 2024:

  • Channel entrance is in South Bimini;

  • Approach the channel as if you are heading into the Bimini Cove Marina in South Bimini;

  • While the advice is not to enter when there is a westerly wind, we entered with a strong westerly wind with both engines on … not as bad as they claimed;

  • There is a very visible red channel marker (which will be on your starboard side when entering the channel);

  • Stay close to the red buoys since there is a shallow sand bar on the port side, which is shown on the 2024 Navionics charts;

  • Guidebook note: sandbar on the green side tends to encroach on the channel;

  • The turn to the left with the green buoy looks like it will be tight but there is plenty of space;

  • From there just stay in the channel (focus on a yellow building with 3 black windows) and there is more than enough space and depth, stay in the dark teal water.

The Marinas and Customs

Marina order coming into the channel:

  • Browns Marina

  • Then some pilings previously known as Weech’s Dock

  • Dock where cargo vessels (i.e. vehicles, come containers) load and unload

  • Sea Crest Marina (yellow rental building)

  • Blue Water Marina (2 dolphin pilings and gas station)

  • Big Game Marina

Clearing customs from Blue Water Marina:

  • after docking, the dockhand should give you custom declaration forms for everyone to fill out;

  • only one person is permitted to leave the vessel to check in, have PCR number, vessel document, completed custom declaration forms and everyone’s passports;

  • when exiting the marina, turn right (north),

    • one step and you are on a narrow 2 way road

    • traffic moves in opposite directions than the US

    • you’ll see a lot of people from the cruise ships driving around in golf carts

    • gas station is right there on the left so usually busy with mopeds and cars;

  • cross the street to go to the Bahama Government Administration Office (pink building);

  • then go to the customs building located at the entrance to Bimini Big Game Marina, where they should give you some papers to be filled out and returned before leaving the Bahamas;

  • take down the quarantine flag;

  • raise the Bahamas courtesy flag

  • everyone is now allowed to get off the boat.
