Warning: Topping lift must be haul up in order to have an angle between the boom and the mast of 90 degrees maximum.

Reef 1

  1. Slightly release the main sail sheet

  2. Release the mainsail halyard to lower the tack of reef 1 at 20cm of the boom (attach the tack)

  3. Haul up the furling line

  4. Haul up the mainsail halyard if it is necessary so the tack point is approximately 10cm above the boom

Reef 2

  1. Release the mainsail sheet

  2. Release the mainsail halyard

  3. Strap the tack point

  4. Haul up the mainsail halyard

  5. Haul up the reef

Reef 3

It is not rigged so bring the sail down.

Hoist Mainsail

  1. Close all windows

    1. Rain will collect inside sail bag

  2. Have both engines turned on

  3. Steer into the wind

    1. Look for water ripples at 90 degrees into the wind

    2. Wind vane top of the mast

  4. Keep boat speed less than 2 knots

    1. As slow as you can while maintaining control

    2. Hold the steering wheel at zero position

    3. Maneuvering with steering wheel does not work when speed is less than 2 knots speed

  5. Pull halyard line manually at the mast and/or use the electric winch at the helm station

    1. 4 wraps on winch

    2. Confirm there are no knots in the lines

      1. Prepare lines

      2. Position yourself so able to guide lines with one hand while operating the winch with the other hand

  6. Caution

    1. Batton moves past the lazy jacks

    2. Sail and halyard do not get caught in the topping lift

    3. Tension

      1. Release reefing clutches

      2. Line is twisted

      3. Winch makes noise

    4. Something is caught

    5. Square top of sail is caught on lazy jacks

    6. Sail is at the top

      1. Winch slows down

  7. Adjust the luff

    1. Tighten the halyard

  8. Bear away

  9. Adjust the main sheet (traveler)

  10. Cleat the halyard

  11. Hoist (put out) headsail

Hoist Headsail

  1. Consider adjusting the slider car

  2. If more upwind and sails will stay close to the boat, move the slider car forward

    1. Release the clutch on the side rail

    2. Release the (white with blue line) on the drum yet keep minimum tension on the line

    3. Confirm the line does not get wound up on the drum

    4. Wind the headsail on the winch and pull it out

Lower Mainsail

  1. Have both engines turned on

  2. Steer into the wind and maintain that heading

  3. Keep boat speed less than 2 knots

    1. As slow as you can while maintaining control

  4. Confirm halyard line is straight

    1. Takeout of storage pouch

    2. Arrange so no twists or knots

  5. Put on gloves

  6. One wrap of halyard line on the winch

  7. Open clutch for the winch

    1. May need to hold on to the halyard line until everyone is ready for sail to be lowered

  8. Allow gravity to drop the sail

  9. Manually lower rest of sail into the sail bag

  10.   Change heading so back on course
